Presentation of the modern Peonies and its hybridizers. Short presentation of the wild Peony species. A list of recommended cultivars presents and describes 122 excellent fine herbaceous Peonies and 30 tree Peonies (Cultivars of Paeonia suffruticosa and Lutea hybrids). The chapters "Culture" and "Propagation" describe in detail Peony cultivating and propagation. Another small chapter gives to the reader a outlook onto the future of Peony breeding. The author presents contemporary breeders like Don Holllingsworth (herbaceous Peonies and Itoh hybrids/Intersectionals), Roger Anderson (Itoh hybrids/Intersectionals), William Seidl (herbaceous and tree Peonies). In the same chapter the reader finds the newest Peonies that are in commerce. In an other chapter, the reader finds a lot of information about Peony cultivation in different countries on the world. A very large appendix lists the available Peonies with their parent plants (if possible) and the nurseries where the plants should be available. An other appendix lists the important Peony nurseries. An excellent detailed third appendix by Linda Engstrom presents die landscaping with Peonies. |

Commentary |
The competent written book gives to the reader a lot of practical informations about Peonies. Most of the color photographs are of good and top quality. But their commentary does not say if the photographed plant is a cultivar of Paeonia lactiflora, Paeonia suffruticosa, a Lutea hybrid, a herbacous hybrid or an Itoh hybrid (Intersectional). I also missed in Chapter 7 (What the Future Holds) a detailed description of the most important living tree Peony breeder, Nassos Daphnis. His exciting new hybrids will soon be on the market. I also missed all the Chinese herbaceous and tree Peonies and the historical and cultural significance of this plant that is cultivated since more than 2000 years. For the serious Peony friend is this book an absolute must, because this book can be called the best general Peony book in English language that is today in commerce. |
